Athleticism Drills

The best cricketers now are all athletes. They can run, jump, dive, throw, bowl, and bat for long periods of time. If we want to be good cricketers, then we must be good athletes. Below are drills designed to help you improve your movement, reactions, and hand-eye coordination.

Reactions

AIM:
Get ball to bounce through opposition goal.
Protect your goal.

GROUP SIZE:

  • Designed for 2-6 people – if there’s 3, 5 or 6 people, then simply swap out after a mistake is made
  • Duplicate as needed

WHAT YOU’LL NEED:

  • 1 x Reaction Ball (a ball with 6 lumps on it)
  • Setup Reaction Ball

  • 2 x same coloured cones
  • 2 x different coloured cones

STEP 1:

  • Setup equipment like this:
  • Setup Reaction Ball

  • Get group into two teams of two.

STEP 2:

  • Team 1 in between one set of cones, Team 2 opposite.
  • Setup Reaction Ball

  • Alternate throws that bounce 1 metre in front of opposition.
  • 1 point for the team who get the ball through the goal.

PROGRESSION:

  • One hand only (strong or weak hand)
  • One eye closed

COACHING POINTS:

  • Stay low, bend knees, weight on balls of feet (not heels)
  • Hands out in front of knees
  • Head still, eyes on ball

AIM:
A Catcher reacts, turns and catches a ball from the Thrower, improving reactions, movement, and catching.

GROUP SIZE:

  • Designed for pairs – if a 3, then have 2 catches
  • Duplicate as needed

WHAT YOU’LL NEED:

  • 2 x Tennis Ball
  • 2 x Wind Ball (Orange)
  • 2 x same coloured cones
  • 2 x different coloured cones

STEP 1:

  • Setup equipment like this:
  • Setup Reaction Ball

  • Get group into two teams of two.

STEP 2:

  • One person stands on 1 coloured cone, the other person stands on the different coloured cone.
  • Setup Reaction Ball

  • The catcher faces away from the thrower.
  • Thrower shouts ‘TURN’ and throws a catch to the Catcher.
  • Catcher must react and turn around straight away and take the catch.
  • 5x each then swap.

PROGRESSION:

  • One hand only (strong or weak hand)
  • One eye closed
  • Tennis Ball = left hand, Wind Ball = right hand
  • Both balls at once

COACHING POINTS:

  • Turn as quickly as possible and find the ball
  • Get hands ready close together, watch the ball
  • Soft hands to catch, otherwise ball will bounce out

AIM:
Improve reactions by catching a ball being dropped for a specific height.

GROUP SIZE:

  • Designed for pairs – if in a 3, then 3rd person mirrors the person dropping the balls – Catcher turns around each go
  • Duplicate as needed

WHAT YOU’LL NEED:

  • 4 x Ball (Tennis/Wind/Hard)
  • 2 x same coloured cones

STEP 1:

  • Get group into pairs
  • Player A with two balls. Player B will be catcher

STEP 2:

  • Player A stands at arm’s length from Player B.
  • Player A (with balls) holds both hands up out in front of them at shoulder height
  • Player B stands at the end of Player A’s arms, with Player B’s arms down by their side
  • Player A randomly drops a single ball, Player B must react and catch it
  • 5x each then swap.

PROGRESSION:

  • Lower height to make reaction time shorter
  • One eye closed
  • Hands behind back
  • Opposite hands catching

COACHING POINTS:

  • Stay relaxed, but focused
  • Look in the middle of the two balls and use peripheral vision.
  • Soft hands to catch, otherwise ball will bounce out

AIM:
Try to get a ricochet from the crossover catches.

GROUP SIZE:

  • Designed for 4 people – if a 5, then swap out when a mistake is made
  • Duplicate as needed

WHAT YOU’LL NEED:

  • 4 x Ball (Tennis/Wind/Hard)
  • 2 x same coloured cones
  • 2 x different coloured cones

STEP 1:

  • Setup equipment like this:
  • Setup Reaction Ball

  • Get group into pairs.
  • Name Player A & Player B.

STEP 2:

  • Player A stands on 1 coloured cone, Player B stands on the different coloured cone.
  • Setup Reaction Ball

  • Diagonal catches will be thrown continuously
  • Between knee and chest height
  • Aiming to get a collision in the middle – and catch the ricochet
  • If there is an odd number, whoever drops a catch swaps out.

PROGRESSION:

  • One hand only (strong or weak hand)
  • One eye closed
  • Four balls at once

COACHING POINTS:

  • Stay low in catching position
  • Get hands ready out in front of knees
  • Watch the ball catch with soft hands

AIM:
React and catch the ball after deviating from hitting a cone.

GROUP SIZE:

  • Designed for pairs – if a three, have 2x catchers, or 2x throwers
  • Duplicate as needed

WHAT YOU’LL NEED:

  • 2 x Ball (Tennis/Wind/Hard)
  • 2 x same coloured cones
  • 2 x different coloured cones
  • 12 x random coloured cones

STEP 1:

  • Setup equipment like this:
  • Setup Minefield Catching

  • Get group into pairs.
  • Name Player A & Player B.

STEP 2:

  • Player A stands on 1 coloured cone, Player B stands on the different coloured cone.
  • Setup Reaction Ball

  • Player B rolls ball along the ground to hit cones at good pace
  • Ball hits cones, jumps up and deviates (quick pace important)
  • Player A tries to catch/stop ball
  • Repeat 5x then swap
  • If there is an odd number, have two people rolling quick fire, or two catchers.

PROGRESSION:

  • One hand only (strong or weak hand)
  • One eye closed
  • Player A faces opposite direction and turns (Player B shouts ‘TURN’) just after roll is made

COACHING POINTS:

  • Stay low in catching position, weight on balls of feet
  • Get hands ready out in front of knees
  • Watch the ball catch with soft hands

AIM:
Lightly deflect catches using a hand, cone or stump.

GROUP SIZE:

  • Designed for 4 people – if you have 3 – have 1 catcher, if you have 5 then someone rests/subs in when a mistake
  • Duplicate as needed

WHAT YOU’LL NEED:

  • 1 x Ball (Tennis/Wind/Hard)
  • 1 x cone or stump
  • 2 x same coloured cones

STEP 1:

  • Put the coloured cones 5 metres apart in a straight line
  • Each group needs a cone/stump and a ball
  • Name Player A, B, C & D

STEP 2:

  • Player A (Thrower) stands on 1 coloured cone with the ball.
  • Player B stands on the other cone with a cone/stump
  • Player C & D stand behind Player B as slip fielders
  • Setup Reaction Ball

  • Player A throws quickly underarm towards the slip fielders
  • Player B tries to lightly deflect the ball
  • Player C & D try to take the catches
  • Repeat 5x then rotate

PROGRESSION:

  • One hand only (strong or weak hand)
  • Player C & D can be looking down, and Player A shouts ‘UP’ when they throw, they look up to take the catch.

COACHING POINTS:

  • Stay low in catching position, weight on balls of feet
  • Get hands ready out in front of knees
  • Watch the ball catch with soft hands

AIM:
Take erratic catches off the swiss ball.

GROUP SIZE:

  • Designed for 2-6 people

WHAT YOU’LL NEED:

  • 1 x Ball (Tennis/Wind/Hard)
  • 1 x Swiss Ball

STEP 1:

  • Have players circled 1-2m away from swiss ball
  • One player starts with ball

STEP 2:

  • Player A (with ball) throws ball into swiss ball.
  • All players react and catch ball if it is coming towards them
  • Continuously throw ball into swiss ball until someone drops the ball

PROGRESSION:

  • One hand only (strong or weak hand)
  • All players apart from the thrower can be facing away from the swiss ball, then turn when thrower shouts ‘TURN’ upon throwing the ball.
  • Last man standing elimination

COACHING POINTS:

  • Stay low in catching position, weight on balls of feet
  • Get hands ready out in front of knees
  • Watch the ball, always expect the ball, catch with soft hands

AIM:
Duck, weave, dodge and sway out of the way of the incoming ball.

GROUP SIZE:

  • Designed for 3 people – if there’s a 4th, either they rest, or create a distraction in front of the batter (cone/stump)
  • Duplicate as needed

WHAT YOU’LL NEED:

  • 1 x Ball (Tennis/Wind/Hard)
  • 3 x same coloured cones

STEP 1:

  • Place cones in 3m apart in a straight line
  • One player on each cone

STEP 2:

  • Player A (with ball) quickly underarms the ball at head height towards Player B.
  • Player B is in the middle (in batting stance – Ie. side on), and has to duck or weave to avoid being hit by the ball
  • Player C catches the ball and repeats the same
  • Repeat 10x then swap

PROGRESSION:

  • Batter goes on knees to restrict movement
  • Player B looks down and looks up when Player A shouts ‘NOW’ upon throwing the ball.

COACHING POINTS:

  • Stay relaxed but focued, always watch the ball
  • Make sure throws are flat and quick aiming at head of batter
  • Duck down if ball is going to batter’s shoulder, weave if the ball is going wide.

Hand-Eye Coordination

AIM:
Take catches while one-eye is shut.

GROUP SIZE:

  • Designed for pairs – if in a 3, then work in a triangle
  • Duplicate as needed

WHAT YOU’LL NEED:

  • 2 x Ball (Tennis/Wind/Hard)
  • 2 x Same coloured cones
  • 2 x Different coloured cones

STEP 1:

  • Setup the equipment like this:
  • Setup Reaction Ball

  • Put the group into pairs, name Player A & B

STEP 2:

  • Player A starts with ball.
  • Both players have one hand covering an eye
  • Catches are continuously throwing back & forth
  • Switch over eyes after 20 catches

PROGRESSION:

  • Different height and side to side catches
  • Stand on one leg as well
  • Last pair standing elimination

COACHING POINTS:

  • Watch the ball as closely as possible
  • Get hands ready fingers spread wide
  • Watch ball all the way into hand

AIM:
Catch two balls thrown to you, one in each hand

GROUP SIZE:

  • Designed for pairs – if in a 3, then work in a triangle
  • Duplicate as needed

WHAT YOU’LL NEED:

  • 2 x Ball (Tennis/Wind/Hard)
  • 2 x Same coloured cones

STEP 1:

  • Setup the equipment like this:
  • Setup Reaction Ball

  • Put the group into pairs, name Player A & B

STEP 2:

  • Player A starts with two balls
  • Player A holds both balls together in front of them
  • Then throws both at the same time
  • Player B catches one ball in each hand
  • Repeat continuously

PROGRESSION:

  • Different height and side to side catches
  • Different coloured ball = a specific hand to catch it with
  • Stand on one leg
  • Last pair standing elimination

COACHING POINTS:

  • Either choose to catch fastest ball first then switch focus onto the other
  • Or focus in between the balls using peripheral vision
  • Get hands ready fingers spread wide

AIM:
Keep the ball up for as long as possible

GROUP SIZE:

  • Designed for 2-6 people
  • Duplicate as needed

WHAT YOU’LL NEED:

  • 1 x Tennis Ball each
  • 1 x Bat/stump each
  • 4 x Same coloured cones

STEP 1:

  • Make a box like this:
  • Setup Reaction Ball

STEP 2:

  • Each player has their bat/stump
  • They must bounce the ball on their bat/stump without touching the ground
  • Do it for as long as possible, record top score
  • If it is too hard, allow one bounce between each keepy up
  • Repeat continuously

PROGRESSION:

  • One eye closed
  • Balance on one leg
  • Hit ball back and forth with another player
  • Last pair standing elimination

COACHING POINTS:

  • Always watch the ball
  • Be precise about where the ball is hitting on the bat/stump
  • Don’t try to hit ball too hard otherwise it’ll go high and will be harder

AIM:
Work around the circle taking catches from all angles

GROUP SIZE:

  • Designed for 4-6 people
  • Duplicate as needed

WHAT YOU’LL NEED:

  • Each player will need a ball (Tennis/Wind/Hard)
  • Each player will need a coloured cone

STEP 1:

  • Setup the drill like this:
  • Setup Reaction Ball

STEP 2:

    Setup Reaction Ball

  • Player A (centre) starts by throwing their ball up vertically
  • Meanwhile, Player A does a quick 1-2 with Player B (outer)
  • Then Player A catches their own ball before it hits the ground
  • Player A moves clockwise to Player C (outer)
  • Repeat for a specific time, amount of cycles, or until a drop

PROGRESSION:

  • All one handed
  • Different coloured ball = a specific hand to catch it with
  • Stand on one leg

COACHING POINTS:

  • Make sure vertical throw is controlled and gives Player A enough time to make the 1-2
  • Quick ball movement is important
  • Get hands ready fingers spread wide

AIM:
Catch cones on a stick/stump

GROUP SIZE:

  • Designed for pairs – if a 3, then have two cone throwers
  • Duplicate as needed

WHAT YOU’LL NEED:

  • 1 x yellow stick/stump
  • 2 x Same coloured cones
  • 6 x Random coloured cones

STEP 1:

  • Put same coloured cones 5 metres apart in a straight line
  • Get group into pairs – Name Player A & B

STEP 2:

  • Player A starts on one cone with the stick/stump
  • Player B kneels down on the opposite cone, with all the random coloured cones
  • Player B throws cones towards Player A – like a frisbee
  • Player A trys to catch each cone by passing the stick/stump through the centre hole
  • Record how many are caught and swap

PROGRESSION:

  • One eye closed
  • Balance on one leg
  • Different point structure for different colours
  • Last pair standing elimination

COACHING POINTS:

  • Always watch the cone
  • Be precise about where the stick/stump is going
  • Make sure throw of cone is good

AIM:
Catch small balls to improve precision and coordination

GROUP SIZE:

  • Designed for pairs – if in a 3, then work in a triangle
  • Duplicate as needed

WHAT YOU’LL NEED:

  • 1 x Ball (Squash/Golf/Bouncy/Marble)
  • 2 x Same coloured cones
  • 2 x Different coloured cones

STEP 1:

  • Setup the equipment like this:
  • Setup Reaction Ball

  • Put the group into pairs, name Player A & B
  • Player A on one coloured cone & Player B on the other coloured cone

STEP 2:

  • Player A starts with ball
  • Player A throws an underarm catch to Player B
  • Catches are continuously thrown back & forth

PROGRESSION:

  • One eye closed
  • One handed catching (strong/weak)
  • Stand on one leg
  • Last pair standing elimination

COACHING POINTS:

  • Watch the ball as closely as possible

AIM:
Throw up two balls, do a quick 1-2 with partner, catch the two balls before hitting the ground

GROUP SIZE:

  • Player A returns ball to Player B before catching the two balls thrown vertically before they hit the ground

AIM:
Juggling between pairs to improve hand-eye coordination

WHAT YOU’LL NEED:

  • 1 x Different coloured cones

STEP 1:

  • Setup the equipment like this:
  • Setup Reaction Ball

  • Put the group into 3’s, name Player A, B & C
  • Player A on one coloured cone & Player B & C on the other coloured cone

STEP 2:

Setup Reaction Ball

  • Player A starts with one ball
  • Player B & C start with two balls
  • Player A bounce throws one ball to either Player B or C
  • Whoever is receiving the ball must throw a ball to Player A at the same time.
  • This allows Player B or C to catch the incoming ball
  • Repeat 20x then swap around

PROGRESSION:

  • One eye closed
  • Stand on one leg
  • Touch ground between each throw

COACHING POINTS:

  • Complete each skill before moving focus onto the next
  • Remain relaxed but focused
  • Make sure ball moves quickly between players

AIM:
Transfer balls across tees while racing against another person

GROUP SIZE:

  • Designed for 4 people – if in an odd number, then simply rotate round
  • Duplicate as needed

WHAT YOU’LL NEED:

  • 6 x Tennis Ball
  • 2 x Same coloured cones
  • 2 x Different coloured cones
  • 12 x Batting tee’s (or cones)

STEP 1:

  • Setup the equipment like this:
  • Setup Reaction Ball

  • Put the group into two teams
  • One team on one coloured cone, Team B on the other coloured cone

STEP 2:

Setup Reaction Ball

  • 1 vs 1 race each time
  • Both start on a shout of ‘GO!’
  • Racers must transfer tennis balls from left to right
  • Making sure the ball stays on the cones
  • Once all 3 balls have been transferred, then run up around furthest cone
  • Straight line race back
  • Repeat, but balls will be transferred opposite direction

PROGRESSION:

  • One hand only
  • Start by lying on floor
  • Must run around furthest cone twice

COACHING POINTS:

  • Complete each skill before moving focus onto the next
  • Remain relaxed but focused
  • Make sure you focus on what you are doing rather than the other person

Agility (Change of Direction)

AIM:
Improve footwork by quickly stepping through ladders on the ground

GROUP SIZE:

  • Designed for flexible groups
  • Duplicate as needed

WHAT YOU’LL NEED:

  • 1 x Ladder
  • 1 x Coloured cone
  • 1 x Different coloured cone

STEP 1:

  • Setup the equipment like this:
  • Setup Reaction Ball

  • Group all start on bottom cone

STEP 2:

  • 1 at a time players run through the ladders performing different sequences
  • When the person in front gets half way down ladder, next person can go
  • Run around Blue cone and run straight back
  • Repeat continuously

PROGRESSION:

  • Double feet in each ladder
  • Facing different directions
  • One foot in, one foot out

COACHING POINTS:

  • Quick feet, light contact
  • Keep in an athletic position, knees bent, low
  • 100% effort while in working zone

AIM:
Improving change of direction by running in triangles

GROUP SIZE:

  • Designed for flexible groups
  • Duplicate as needed

WHAT YOU’LL NEED:

  • 1 x Coloured cone
  • 2 x Different coloured cones

STEP 1:

  • Setup the equipment like this:
  • Setup Reaction Ball

  • Group all start on bottom cone

STEP 2:

  • 1 at a time players run around triangle back to starting position
  • When the person in front gets to the first cone, next person can go
  • Stop when back at start
  • Repeat when everyone is back at start, but opposite way

PROGRESSION:

  • Touch cone
  • Run backwards along top of triangle
  • Side step along top of triangle

COACHING POINTS:

  • Accelerate quickly
  • Low athletic position when turning
  • 100% effort while in working zone

AIM:
Improving change of direction by running forward and backwards

GROUP SIZE:

  • Designed for flexible groups
  • Duplicate as needed

WHAT YOU’LL NEED:

  • 3 x Same coloured cone
  • 2 x Different coloured cones

STEP 1:

  • Setup the equipment like this:
  • Setup Reaction Ball

  • Group all start on bottom cone

STEP 2:

Setup Reaction Ball

  • 1 at a time players run out to middle cone
  • Then run backwards to left or right cone
  • Then sprint out to far cone, run around cone, and sprint back to start
  • When the person in front gets to the first cone, next person can go
  • Repeat continuously making sure alternating sides

PROGRESSION:

  • Touch cone
  • Side steps to outer cones
  • Run backwards on home straight, turn and sprint when at middle cone

COACHING POINTS:

  • Accelerate quickly
  • Low athletic position when turning
  • 100% effort while in working zone

AIM:
Improving change of direction by slaloming through cones

GROUP SIZE:

  • Designed for flexible groups
  • Duplicate as needed

WHAT YOU’LL NEED:

  • 3 x One coloured cone
  • 5 x One coloured cone
  • 5 x One coloured cone

STEP 1:

  • Setup the equipment like this:
  • Setup Reaction Ball

  • Group all start on bottom left cone

STEP 2:

Setup Reaction Ball

  • 1 at a time players run out to first slalom
  • Players run forwards side stepping through cones
  • Then sprint out to far cone, run around cone, and repeat slalom on way back through
  • When the person in front gets half way up the first slalom, next person can go
  • Repeat continuously
  • Emphasis on not cutting corners

PROGRESSION:

  • Two team race, start opposite sides
  • Forward on one, backwards on the other

COACHING POINTS:

  • Accelerate quickly
  • Low athletic position when turning
  • 100% effort while in working zone

AIM:
Increase explosive power through jumping over hurdles

GROUP SIZE:

  • Designed for flexible groups
  • Duplicate as needed

WHAT YOU’LL NEED:

  • 3 x Different coloured cone

STEP 1:

  • Setup the equipment like this:
  • Setup Reaction Ball

  • Group all start on bottom cone

STEP 2:

  • 1 at a time players run out and jump over hurdles
  • Complete hurdle jumps then sprint to left/right cone
  • When the person in front gets 2nd hurdle, next person can go
  • Repeat continuously

PROGRESSION:

  • Two footed jumps
  • One leg hops – both sides
  • Sideway hops (Two/one legged)
  • Straight leg pogo jumps

COACHING POINTS:

  • Jump as high as possible
  • Light contact between hurdles
  • 100% effort while in working zone

AIM:
Improving ability to change direction of running

GROUP SIZE:

  • Designed for flexible groups
  • Duplicate as needed

WHAT YOU’LL NEED:

  • 4 x Different coloured cones

STEP 1:

  • Setup the equipment like this:
  • Setup Reaction Ball

  • Group all start 5 metres belowbottom cone

STEP 2:

Setup Reaction Ball

  • 1 at a time players run out to the top cone
  • Then circle cone facing forwards
  • Then run backwards to bottom cone
  • Run to centre and side step to left cone
  • Circle round, and side step to right cone
  • Loop round back to centre then turn and sprint to finish
  • Repeat continuously one after each other
  • Emphasis on not cutting corners

PROGRESSION:

  • Two team race
  • Shout out coloured cone combo

COACHING POINTS:

  • Accelerate quickly
  • Low athletic position when turning
  • 100% effort while in working zone

AIM:
Improving ability to change direction of running through box zig-zags

GROUP SIZE:

  • Designed for flexible groups
  • Duplicate as needed

WHAT YOU’LL NEED:

  • 2 x One coloured cone
  • 2 x One coloured cone

STEP 1:

  • Setup the equipment like this:
  • Setup Reaction Ball

  • Group all start 5 metres below bottom left cone

STEP 2:

Setup Reaction Ball

  • 1 at a time players run out to the top left cone
  • Then turn around cone and run to bottom right cone
  • Then run forwards to top right cone
  • Finish off sprinting to bottom left cone
  • Repeat continuously one after each other
  • Emphasis on not cutting corners

PROGRESSION:

  • Two team race – mirror setup
  • Different combo sequences (eg. Start on right)
  • Always facing forward
  • Side steps through middle section

COACHING POINTS:

  • Accelerate quickly
  • Low athletic position when turning
  • 100% effort while in working zone

AIM:
Improving explosive power in legs with sideways skater jumps

GROUP SIZE:

  • Designed for flexible groups
  • Duplicate as needed

WHAT YOU’LL NEED:

  • 1 x One coloured cone
  • 7 x One coloured cone

STEP 1:

  • Setup the equipment like this:
  • Setup Reaction Ball

  • Group all start below bottom cone

STEP 2:

Setup Reaction Ball

  • 1 at a time players do 1 legged sideways jumps to each cone
  • When person in front reaches 3rd cone, next person can go
  • After completing 6x skater jumps turn around and sprint back down the right hand side of the cones
  • Repeat continuously one after each other

PROGRESSION:

  • Same leg hops back instead of sprint
  • Competition to see who can get furthest with no wobble on landing
  • Increase distance to jump

COACHING POINTS:

  • Stick on landing – not quick jumps
  • Low athletic position when jumping
  • 100% effort while in working zone

AIM:
Improving explosive power in legs when turning between the wickets

GROUP SIZE:

  • Designed for flexible groups
  • Duplicate as needed

WHAT YOU’LL NEED:

  • 2 x One coloured cone
  • 1 x Hurdle
  • Each player needs a bat

STEP 1:

  • Setup the equipment like this:
  • Setup Reaction Ball

  • Group all start 5 metres below bottom cones

STEP 2:

Setup Reaction Ball

  • 1 at a time players sprint out towards hurdle 10m away
  • Then turn by sliding bat underneath hurdle
  • Sprint back to start
  • Slide bat in to finish
  • When person in front slides bat into hurdle, next person can go
  • Repeat continuously one after each other

PROGRESSION:

  • Turn facing different directions
  • Introduce a random ‘NO’ call where runner has to go back to start
  • Increase distance away to full pitch

COACHING POINTS:

  • Hold bat with two hands when running
  • Low athletic position when turning
  • 100% effort while in working zone
